Live on the west side of the main street in Llanymynech and you will not be troubled by the costs of medical prescriptions; to the east, you will have to put your hand in your pocket. The pretty village west of Shrewsbury, with Offa's Dyke at one end and a disused pub at the other, straddles the Welsh-English border. In Wales NHS prescriptions are free, in England not.
"Depending on which side you live, you have to sign up with a different GP," says Jennifer Bridger, who runs the local village shop and post office, just inside Wales. "Some people think it can be a bit of an inconvenience, others don't mind."
